HIM (ou précédemment HER aux USA ; voir histoire dessous) est un groupe de love metal de Finlande.
Le groupe combine des paroles sur les thèmes de l’amour et de la mort, utilisant des sons heavy de guitare style metal d’où la création du genre love metal. Le groupe fut formé en 1991 par le chanteur Ville (qui se prononce “Vil-lé” pas comme notre “ville”) Hermanni Valo, Mikko Viljami “Linde” Lindström (Lily Lazer) et Mikko Heinrik Julius Paananen (Migé Amour). Le groupe se compose maintenant de Ville, Linde, Migé, d’un troisième clavier Jani Purttinen (Emerson Burton), et d’un deuxième batteur Mikka Kirstian Karppinen (Gas Lipstick).
Le nom du groupe complet était initialement ‘His Infernal Majesty’ (Son Infernale Majesté), mais cette signification fut vite abandonnée et le groupe s’appela alors simplement HIM. Toutefois, le vieux nom a continué à vivre créant quelques confusions. Le groupe rigole souvent à propos de sa signification, par exemple disant qu’il voulait dire “Hanson is Murder” quand Hanson commença à jouer de la musique.
Le groupe sortit son premier EP en 1996, nommé 666 ways to love: prologue, lequel contient la seule photo publique connue de la mère de Valo, Anita. Ils sont devenus raisonnablement connus au-delà de la Finlande pour leur reprise du tube Wicked Game de Chris Isaak. En 1997, ils furent largement exposés en Scandinavie quand leur premier album sortit à la vente, Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666.
En 1999 paraît le deuxième album, Razorblade romance, enregistré au pays de Galles. L’album reçut un certain succès en Europe lorsque la chanson Join Me In Death fut ajoutée à la version européenne du film de science-fiction The 13th Floor, qui atteignit le top du classement allemand en 2000 et surtout un disque d’or!
L’album atteignit quelques magasins américains mais HIM n’eut pas le droit de s’appeler ‘HIM’ car un autre groupe possédait les droits de ce nom. Donc ils changèrent leur nom en ‘HER’ seulement pour les USA et cet album. Les droits pour ‘HIM’ furent finalement achetés et tous les les albums avec ‘HER’ cessèrent d’être distribués et remplacés par la version ‘HIM’.
En 2001, le troisième album Deep Shadows And Brillant Highlights voit le jour. Après son enregistrement, trois membres du groupe formèrent un groupe de rock’n’roll appelé Daniel Lioneye. Ces membres sont Linde, Ville Valo et Migé Amour.
En 2003 suit le quatrième album intitulé Love metal, lequel a été très bien accepté par les médias américains, dont les magazines Kerrang et Rolling Stone. Après ce nouvel opus, le groupe fit une tournée aux USA en février de 2004 suivi d’une autre la même année.
Le dernier album Dark light est sortit le 26 septembre 2005. Le manager du groupe, Seppo Vesterinen, est aussi le manager du groupe The Rasmus et a travaillé avec Hanoi Rocks, un groupe de glam rock des années 80 qui a été longtemps le groupe finlandais le plus reconnu internationalement.
HIM est aussi maintenant reconnu mondialement par leur symbole, le heartagram. Celui-ci est composé d’un cœur et d’un pentagramme, symbolisant le contraste entre la vie et la mort ou l’amour et la haine. HIM et son heartagram apparaissent de nombreuses fois dans le show Viva La Bam et vidéos CKY de Bam Margera, dont les bande-sons sont souvent tirées des chansons de HIM.

L’Heartagram est le symbole du groupe HIM. Dessiné par le chanteur Ville Valo, c’est en fait la fusion d’un pentagramme inversé et d’un cœur. Ville explique que, pour lui, c’est la représentation de l’amour et de la mort, des contraires, un peu comme le Yin et le Yang. Il correspond aussi au style de musique du groupe, appelé “love metal“.

HIM on suomalainen, viisihenkinen rockia ja metallia soittava yhtye. Yhtye itse kuvailee musiikkiaan “love metalliksi”, kriitikot usein alternative metalliksi tai heavy metalliksi. HIM on yksi Suomen tunnetuimmista sekä ulkomailla eniten myyneistä suomalaisista yhtyeistä. Yhtyeen levyjä on myyty maailmalla noin 4,5 miljoonaa, joka on eniten suomalaisista yhtyeistä. Yhtye on saavuttanut myös kultalevyn Yhdysvalloissa ensimmäisenä suomalaisena yhtyeenä. Yhtyeen johtohahmo on laulaja Ville Valo.
Yhtyeen logo on heartagram, joka on sydämen ja pentagrammin yhdistelmä, ja se kuvaa rakkautta ja kuolemaa, hyvää ja pahaa, sekä HIMin musiikkityyliä, love metallia. Logossa pentagrammi on väärin päin ja sen kahden ylimmän sakaran päät on pyöristetty niin, että se näyttää sydämeltä. Ville Valo väittää keksineensä sen krapulassa samana päivänä kun täytti 20 vuotta, eli 22. marraskuuta 1996.
Myös Jackassista ja Viva la Bamista tuttu skateboard-taituri Bam Margera yhdistetään heartagramiin. Margera on HIMin ihailija ja Ville Valon ystävä, ja hän on ohjannut neljä HIMin musiikkivideota. Margera on saanut yhtyeeltä luvan käyttää heartagramia logonaan, minkä vuoksi jotkut ovat luulleet figuuria hänen kehittelemäkseen.

HIM is a rock band from Finland formed in 1991 by vocalist Ville Valo, guitarist Mikko Lindström, and bassist Mikko Paananen. They have released six full length albums to date. As of 2007, they are the first and only Finnish rock band to sell Gold in the United States.
Ville Valo recorded a duet with Polish actress Natalia Avelon for the movie “Das Wilde Leben”/”The Wild Life”. The track, a cover of Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood’s song “Summer Wine,” was released as a single in January 2007. The band went on tour with Linkin Park’s Projekt: Revolution along with bands such as Julien-K, My Chemical Romance, Placebo, The Bled, and Taking Back Sunday. Ville Valo also recorded “Just for Tonight” with Linde’s wife, Manna. Apparently, Ville Valo was also approached by the composers for the “James Bond 007″ franchise at the BMI awards in October, and asked to co-write and sing the theme song for the sequel to 2006’s “Casino Royale” which starred Daniel Craig as James Bond.
HIM’s genre is debated in some circles; their musical style is often referred to as “love metal” by Valo and by the group’s fans. Musically the band mix influences from hard rock and early heavy metal. Ville Valo has stated that the band started as a “Black Sabbath tribute band of sorts”. Valo stated in an interview on the Love Metal Archives Vol. I DVD, that he was fed up with journalists and interviewers asking him (Valo), and the rest of the band what the genre of HIM was. He said in answer to that question, they created the album entitled Love Metal. Critics commonly refer to them as alternative rock, gothic rock, or gothic metal. However, their musical style varies between albums, and even between songs. Some of the more common genres applied (correctly or not) to their music include:

The heartagram is the trademarked symbol of HIM, best described as a combination of a heart and an inverted pentacle (love & hate), created by Ville Valo the day after his twentieth birthday. Valo has said that “the heartagram stands for HIM as a band, as an entity, and for ‘love metal’ in general.” Some people describes it as modern yin-yang because of contrast in this symbol. Many fans of the band have heartagram tattoos, or tattoos of other HIM emblems — such as the single heart on Valo’s right wrist, and a number of fan-submitted photos of same decorated the lyric booklet for the limited edition of Dark Light.
Ville Valo has allowed his close friend, Jackass star, actor, and professional skateboarder, Bam Margera to share the license on the heartagram image and Margera has accordingly used it for his promotional purposes, including using it on his Adio shoes and Element skateboards. Because of the shared license, the symbol is often thought to belong solely to Margera. According to Valo, the band has become better known for their logo than their music.
In a video interview, Ville has stated that the Heartagram is a “Modern Yin Yang,” the heart being the Yin and the inverted pentacle being the Yang.
A heartagram appears at the end of the music video for the song DARE by the band Gorillaz. It was also parodied, as the “horseagram” — a combination of a horse shoe and a pentagram — in the episode “Ode to Sue” of the video game comedy troupe Mega64.
During the filming of Jackass Number 2, cast member Steve-o got a tattoo called a “Dickagram” It is basically the heartagram, but instead of a point at the bottom, it has a flaccid penis. Also above it is the word “Me” in the same font used by Him. When unveiling it to Bam, he said “Its not about HIM dude, its about Me!”
